5+2+X Technology Strategy

At the 89th China International Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF) on 11 April 2024, Midea Medical unveiled its "5+2+X Technology Strategy" to drive innovation in China’s medical sector.

The strategy integrates five medical business units with two group-level platforms—Midea’s Central Research Institute and AI Research Institute—to focus on core, advanced, and enabling technologies. It aims to deliver demand-led, digitally driven product and service solutions.

With a strong push in innovation, global talent, and AI integration, Midea is accelerating breakthroughs in next-generation CT, MRI, and intelligent imaging. The company is also advancing core component R&D to strengthen its vertical capabilities and lead in high-end medical equipment innovation.

Business Segments

Midea Medical focuses on five key hospital scenarios: medical labs, operating theatres, inpatient wards, outpatient pharmacies, and logistics command centres—building out two core segments: clinical solutions and infrastructure operations. In partnership with industry leaders, it’s creating a diverse, collaborative medical ecosystem and driving the next wave of healthcare innovation.

WanDong Medical: Specialises in CT, MRI, and X-ray technologies; launched the world’s first helium-free MRI and China’s first full-spine DR requiring just one-third the radiation dose.

KUKA: Brings over 20 years of experience in surgical robotics, offering solutions for radiotherapy, surgical navigation, rehabilitation, and patient positioning.

Midea Biomedical: Features dual technologies—air-curtain cooling and ECO rapid cooling—to keep internal sample temperatures stable (≤2°C fluctuation, ±1.5°C uniformity) even with frequent door openings.

Swisslog Healthcare: Focuses on intra-hospital logistics, including pneumatic tube systems with speeds of 6–8 m/s to support emergency response efficiency.

Midea Building Technologies delivers end-to-end integrated solutions, combining software and hardware to optimize smart building ecosystems.

Milestones

Jun. 2024 – Midea-backed HeYou Hospital officially opened in Shunde, combining smart, low-carbon, and high-efficiency design. It features advanced Midea Medical solutions including real-time drug delivery, smart imaging, infusion, fall prevention, infant protection, and ICU safety systems.

Apr. 2024 – At CMEF 2024, Midea Medical launched the “5+2+X” technology strategy and the AIIO solution to drive full-process digital, smart, and connected healthcare.

Jun. 2023 – At CHCC 2023, Midea Building Technologies and Swisslog Healthcare unveiled LIFE2.0 smart hospital solutions, covering platforms and logistics systems.

May. 2023 – At CMEF Spring 2023, Midea released five new product solutions under the theme The Next One.

Dec. 2022 – Released the “Respect Every Second of Life” annual report.

Jul. 2022 – Announced its five core medical scenarios and formalised the brand mission: Respect Every Second of Life.

Jun. 2024 – Published the HEST Smart Hospital Blue Paper, defining hospital innovation through Humanism, Economy, Society, and Technology.

2021 – Acquired a majority stake in Wandong Medical for over RMB 4 billion, forming a flagship medical business alongside KUKA, Swisslog Healthcare, Midea Midea Biomedical, and Midea Building Technologies.

2018 – Swisslog Healthcare’s China business was merged into a 50/50 joint venture with Midea, focusing on hospital logistics and pharmacy automation.

2015 – Midea acquired a 10.2% stake in global robotics leader KUKA, later completing a full acquisition and privatisation with a total investment of RMB 30 billion.
